According to police, the attacks happened around 8:20 a.m. outside Pauline Johnson Junior Public School in Scarborough.

Speaking at a press conference Friday, the victim, 11-year-old Khawlah Noman, says the man smiled at her when he cut her hijab. "I can't imagine how afraid she must have been", he said. "The man just ran away". She made a loud noise and joined a crowd of people. He came again. He continued cutting my hijab again.

Going on Noman's description, police are looking for an East Asian man in his 20s with a medium build, black hair and moustache wearing glasses.

The man is said to be in his mid-20s, and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black trousers. The man fled the scene after the assault. She was left alone, separated from the group, and she said the man attacked her a second time. "Given the nature of what he had used it for, yes, it's a bit of a public safety issue".

Khawlah - who appeared alongside her mother and her brother - said she is now afraid to walk to school, but was comforted by the support of her school and family. "I feel like this should stop". "I think what you're doing is wrong".

Authorities said the girl was on her way to school when she felt something and turned around to see a man trying to cut off her head scarf.

Noman's mom, who also spoke to media at the school Friday afternoon, teared up as she recounted seeing her daughter's damaged headscarf.

"I'm frustrated and I'm angry but I do believe in peace in Canada", Samad said. "I'm just so happy she's safe. It's just not Canada". He should get help.

"This does not represent who we are", Wynne wrote in a tweet.

Khawlah said she's now "actually really scared" to walk to school.

The girl was not hurt, but her hijab had a 12-inch cut.

"It is offensive, obviously", she said. "We don't know what motivated the attack". "I want to give him the message - 'We're all in this together and we should live in harmony.' It's a multicultural country".

Khawlah had been walking for about two minutes up Birchmount Rd. when the incident occurred.

The Toronto District School Board said it was offering support to Khawlah and her family, as well as other students, and working with investigators on the case.

The school serves almost 300 students in kindergarten to grade six classes "of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds", according to the local school board.
