The number of women working in top films barely increased in 2017

A study done by Celluloid Ceiling discovered that past year, only one percent of the top-grossing films employed 10 or more women in key behind-the-scenes roles, while 70 percent of films employed 10 or more men in such positions.

What's even more surprising is that, among the top 250 domestic grossing films in 2017.

If the scale is adjusted to the top 100 films in 2017, women working behind the scenes only account for a total of 16%. "This negligence has produced a toxic culture that supported the recent sexual harassment scandals and truncates so many women's careers", Lauzen said in a statement.

The study comes as Hollywood has been plagued with sexual misconduct accusations, and in response, stars came together at Sunday's Golden Globes by wearing head-to-toe black to protest sexual harassment, abuse and gender inequality.

The proportion of women working as directors, writers, producers, executive producers, editors and cinematographers ― a group that shapes the stories told onscreen from their conception to filming to screening for audiences ― has remained virtually unchanged for two decades. Ten percent of films employed six to nine women, while only 1 percent employed 10 or more women. Slightly less than 30 percent of films had no or just one woman in the aforementioned roles.

Women made up only 18 percent of all the directors, writers, producers, executive producers, editors, and cinematographers on 2017's top 250 films - a percentage that has remained nearly constant since the study began in 1998.

Only 11% of the highest-grossing movies in the United States past year were directed by women, researchers have found. And the percentage of women cinematographers remained the same at 4 percent. But the percentages of writers and editors actually declined - from 13 to 11 percent and from 20 to 16 percent, respectively. The study also analyzes women's involvement in the top 500 films, which this year showed that woman directors employ higher percentages of women in other behind-the-scenes roles. For example, in films with female directors, women comprised 68 percent of writers. Female cinematographers only represented 2 percent of the top 100 films. Directors like Greta Gerwig, Patty Jenkins and Dee Cees did not only get love from the critics, but also achieved massive box office success across genres.

This despite the fact that female-directed feature films pulled in a huge $1.2 billion globally in 2017, proving that women have what it takes to make films people want to see.

The nominations for next month's Bafta film awards were announced earlier this week - and, again, the best director category was exclusively male.
