'Super blue blood moon' to take place during lunar eclipse

On average, blue moons appear once every two and a half years, and while they occur much more frequently than a total solar eclipse, the last time a super blue blood moon took place was in 1866. This is because the moon is located closer in its orbit around the Earth, known as "perigee".

A supermoon is when the Moon reaches its nearest point toward earth, making it appear 30 percent brighter and about 14 percent larger.

In fact, the eclipse will cause the moon to appear red, hence the term "blood moon".

However, when a supermoon is close to the horizon, it appears even bigger.

By the time the phenomenon would be viewable in the sky over South Florida, it'll be close to 7 a.m. January 31, when the moon is dipping near the horizon and the day is breaking.

"Blue moons" are fairly rare, but another one will occur this year in March 2018, followed by the next one on October 31st during Halloween 2020. The term "blue moon" is an unscientific term with hazy origins, possibly from folklore, that some use to refer to a second full moon in a month.

Each full moon occurs every 29.5 days, however calendar months vary between 28 and 31 days.

This happens when a full moon, Earth and the Sun line up.

Throw in a total lunar eclipse and you have a rare alignment of events the likes of which hasn't been seen since 1866, which also reports that the next blue moon total eclipse is set to happen December 31, 2028.

The moon does not have its own light, but instead is illuminated due to its surface reflecting the Sun's rays. In this case, the supermoon also happens to be the day of the lunar eclipse. It will look like a dark shadow moving across the moon. "Often cast in a reddish hue because of the way the atmosphere bends the light, totally eclipsed Moons are sometimes called 'blood Moons'".

And if you capture a great picture, we would love to see it!

Obviously, a telescope would be ideal, but it should be fine to view with your naked eye as well!
