The health secretary has apologised for non-urgent surgeries being postponed - saying it's "absolutely not what I want".

Willett said that the delay in non-urgent operations is not a crisis, but that NHS England is responding to concerns from doctors and nurses over a surge in flu cases caused by the cold weather.

It comes as part of a bid to try to free up hospital staff and beds, with the deferral of non-urgent inpatient elective care - including hip replacements - also extended until the end of the month.

NHS England reiterated that cancer operations and time-critical procedures should go ahead as planned.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We are working with our NHS colleagues to manage demand pressures on the system and have deployed additional paramedics to assist with hospital turnarounds at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow".

She said: "The NHS has been better prepared for this winter than ever before".

Office workers have been volunteering to help out colleagues in hospitals and GP practices by taking on administrative and cleaning roles over the next five days.

"However, we continually review the situation". NHS England has also announced that sanctions for mixed-sex accomodation breaches will be temporarily lifted, with current NHS rules stating men and women should be treated on different wards. "We are committed to making sure our hospital has the resources it needs and will continue to lobby for further support".

"It is completely unacceptable that the 85% bed occupancy target for general and acute hospital services has been missed every quarter for more than seven years, resulting in patient safety being compromised on a regular basis".

Newcastle, Bristol, Manchester and Cardiff already offer supervised areas - more commonly called "drunk tanks" - where drunk revellers can be checked over, and even sleep it off, instead of being taken to A&E unnecessarily.

The East and North Herts NHS Trust say their hospitals - including the Lister, New QE2 and Hertford - are very busy at the moment.

Past year 101 health officials were paid more than Theresa May, who has a salary of just over £150,000.

"If you do become unwell and need medical help fast but it's not a 999 emergency, call NHS 111 for clinical advice, assessment and for direction to the most appropriate services for treatment".

Prof Hinchliffe said: "Like all hospitals across the NHS, we have been experiencing very significant demand for our services, especially in our emergency departments".
