Florida, Tampa Bay graduation rates rise above 80 percent

That's up from 82.3 the previous year, according to data released Wednesday by the state Department of Education.
Hernando County, which had the highest graduation rate for the class of 2016, saw the least amount of growth of 1.5 percentage points to a new rate of 82.6 percent.
"Because students with a high school diploma earn $380,000 more during their lifetimes compared to students who don't graduate, this increase has a $255 million positive economic impact on our community", the district said in a statement.
In Central Florida, all school districts but Lake County's posted higher rates in 2017 than in 2016. Pinellas' 11 percentage point increase is the largest among those districts.
Florida hit a 14-year high in high school graduation rates in the 2016-2017 school year, and both Escambia and Santa Rosa counties were part of the uptick.
Sarasota schools increased.3 percentage points to 85.7 while Polk schools rose to 75.4, an increase of 3.6 percentage points. Though its rate grew 2.3 percentage points, Pasco County still lags behind Tampa Bay with a rate of 81.4 percent.
One of the criteria in determining high school's grades is the graduation rate. 36 states were ahead of Florida's 80.7 percent number that year.
Gov. Rick Scott announced the increase Wednesday. "I look forward to working with the Legislature during the upcoming session to make sure our students have the resources they need to continue to build on this accomplishment for years to come".
In Collier County, minority and disabled graduation rates were ahead of the state average. That figure was 72.9 percent in Lee County.
Graduation rates by county, race and gender can be viewed here. But Bowden said the state slightly adjusted the way rates were counted this year, no longer factoring in students who started attending public schools in ninth grade but graduated from a private school.
