Fingerprint Recognition in Smartphone Market to Grow 60% in 2018

The technology is production-ready, according to Synaptics, which said it's been talking to vendors across the smartphone industry. Phone makers have moved them to the side or back, or removed them entirely.

Made in collaboration with Synaptics, the fingerprint sensor will only be "visible" when it is needed; a fingerprint icon will be shown on the display whenever the sensor is active.

We demoed the fingerprint scanner and we have to say the near-final solution is solid. That version used an ultrasonic sensor which was created with support from chipmaker Qualcomm.

Vivo's promotional photo teasing in-display fingerprint scanning. At the end of 2016, Synaptics released UnderGlass, an optical solution of fingerprint sensing, which overcomes the limitation that capacitive solutions can not sense through the glass panel of phones.

As you touch the screen, the lit-up fingerprint is then reflected into an in-display fingerprint sensor which is then authenticated.

Registering your fingerprint works the same way it does on a phone with a regular fingerprint sensor. When waking up the phone, a blue fingerprint icon will show up where youre supposed to place your finger. Even though the sensor is hidden from view, it's still able to read your fingerprint in less than a second-0.7 seconds to be exact, Synaptics said.

Once your finger's been registered, unlocking your phone works just as if there was a physical fingerprint sensor below the screen.

The Face ID on the new iPhone X is good, but it does fail at times. After more than a year of development, Synaptics' optical solutions of in-display fingerprint sensing have the chance to enter mass production due to the increasing yield rate of Synaptics and other related companies.

Fingerprint scanner has now become an essential feature on smartphones, right from mid-range to flagships, one just can't do without it.

Synaptics has confirmed that the security of the in-display fingerprint scanner's authentication would be at the same level as the current fingerprint scanners in premium devices like Pixel 2 or OnePlus 5T. That way, you'll be able to place your fingers anywhere to unlock the phone. If you're just slightly off, it usually fails to recognize it. This Vivo smartphone is the first one to have an in-screen fingerprint sensor.
