Disney announces Star Wars: Rivals, a PvP shooter for Android and iOS

Kristine Garrett | 12 January, 2018, 18:57

Star Wars: Rivals is being marketed as "the first real-time Star Wars competitive action shooter for mobile devices", and as someone that hasn't been all that interested in previous Star Wars mobile games, this might be the first to get my attention. The game is cross-platform compatible, so iOS and Android gamers will be able to go head-to-head.

Available now for pre-registration on the Play Store. Its premise is a lot like the usual free-to-play PVP: collect characters via random draws, create teams and then fight with other players via online matches.

Today, Lucasfilm and Disney officially announced Star Wars: Rivals - the first real-time Star Wars competitive action shooter for mobile devices. Of course, these legendary characters will have to be unlocked through hours of gameplay most likely, but the gameplay trailer makes it look like a fun grind.

Star Wars: Rivals offers weapons such as Chewbacca's bowcaster, Han Solo's DL-44 pistol, and Boba Fett's EE-3 carbine rifle.

The new PvP game features all fan-favorite characters from the "Star Wars" franchise. These include Bespin, Scarif, Jakku, and Death Star.

The game seems to have been built on the same pay-to-win system that now plagues Star Wars Battlefront 2 game, but if you haven't played it yet, here's how Star Wars: Rivals will work. Players who download from Google Play will get a special bonus: exclusive access to death trooper support units. The game also features some of the new characters that Disney introduced in "The Force Awakens" and "Rogue One", like Finn, Captain Phasma, Jyn Erson and Director Krennic.

"App Store users will get exclusive access to Rebel Special Forces (SpecForces) support units for a limited time when the game launches", the blog post adds.
