So hopefully he's paying attention tomorrow, when a public letter, signed by more than 100 chief executives from some of America's most impactful businesses, urges politicians to pass legislation before January 19 that allows Dreamers to continue their lives in the US unimpeded.
The request from corporate leaders comes as lawmakers are negotiating a legislative replacement for the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Daca) program that spared Dreamers from deportation. According to the New York Times, three former Department of Homeland Security secretaries estimated that is the amount of time the agency will need to implement a new program.
The choice is crystal clear: either Congress will pass bipartisan legislation to protect Dreamers along with increased border security by January 19, or Congress will fail to pass these protections, voting instead for a year-long spending bill that will fund the deportation of these DACA recipients.
They said that not only would the termination cause "a tremendous upheaval in the lives of DACA employees", but that not passing legislation in a prompt manner "will lead to businesses losing valuable talent, cause disruptions in the workforce and will result in significant costs". The CEOs cited a study that determined ending the DACA program could result in a $215 billion decrease in the nation's gross domestic product.
The letter comes after a judge temporarily blocked the decision to end the DACA program, which has protected around 800,000 people who were brought to the US.
"It just shows everyone how broken and unfair our Court System is when the opposing side in a case (such as DACA) always runs to the 9th Circuit and nearly always wins before being reversed by higher courts", Trump tweeted Wednesday morning. It urges lawmakers to "act immediately and pass a permanent bipartisan legislative solution to enable Dreamers who are now living, working, and contributing to our communities to continue doing so".
"I do not favor punishing children, most of whom are now adults, for the actions of their parents".
President Trump's decision to rescind DACA is a grave injustice to hundreds of thousands of young immigrants, creating crisis for immigrant families across America.
