Israel strikes Syrian military base in overnight attacks

Israel strikes Syrian military base in overnight attacks Israel strikes Syrian military base in overnight attacks

The military statement said the new aggression reflects Israel's support to the terror groups in Syria and its desperate attempt to lift their morals after the "painful blows dealt to the terror groups" by the Syrian army across the country, mainly in the city of Harasta in eastern Damascus, and the northwestern province of Idlib.

Idlib has seen fierce clashes in recent weeks, as the army pushed to seize a pivotal road between Damascus and Syria's second city, Aleppo. Rebels captured Abu Zuhour in 2015 after a three-year siege. According to foreign media, Israeli aircraft regularly conduct air raids against Syria aimed, in particular, against fighters of the Hezbollah Lebanese Shia movement who fight alongside Syrian government forces.

According to United Kingdom based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the blast took place near the headquarters of a rebel group.

The offensive in the southern parts of Idlib province comes amid intense airstrikes and shelling that have killed 21 people since Sunday, according to the Observatory.

The army says the Syrian air defense confronted the missile attacks on the outposts in the area of Qutayfeh in the Damascus countryside on Tuesday. Rebels had surrounded the base. Other rebel groups complain that HTS is refusing to cooperate with them in holding back government forces.

Israel has carried out dozens of air strikes in Syria in the course of Syria's civil war, against what it says are suspected arms shipments believed to be bound for Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group, which is fighting alongside Syrian government forces.

In the northwestern city of Idlib, meanwhile, paramedics said the death toll from a massive vehicle bombing the previous evening has risen to at least 25.

The Syrian conflict began when the Baath regime, in power since 1963 and led by Assad, responded with military force to peaceful protests demanding democratic reforms during the Arab Spring wave of uprisings, triggering an armed rebellion fuelled by mass defections from the Syrian army.

The Observatory on Monday gave a higher death toll, saying 34 people were killed, including 18 civilians.
