President seeks $18 billion to extend border wall over 10 years

Bennie Garza | 08 January, 2018, 19:35

The administration has a 10-year, $18 billion plan to build a wall, something deeply unpopular with Democrats, especially when tied to DACA.

In an acknowledgement of the Senate's new political math - in which Republicans now control one fewer seat after the election of Doug Jones (D-Ala.) - GOP leaders are pledging to work across the aisle.

Trump, for instance, declared Saturday that he will not sign legislation protecting hundreds of thousands of young people who were brought to the US illegally as children unless Congress agrees to fund his promised border wall as well as overhaul the legal immigration system.

"The wall is bigger than a policy proposal - it's a symbol", a source close to Trump told Axios. "This move by the White House does not bode well".

'We hope that we're going to be able to work out an arrangement with the Democrats, ' the president said.

"We don't want to trade the lives of 800,000 people for a wall across the United States", he added.

President Trump has ended the program - and their protected status will start expiring in March.

Trump's comments came after Chang Ung, North Korea's International Olympic Committee representative, said his nation is likely to send a pair of figure skaters to the global competition coming to Pyeongchang, South Korea. "I have a very good relationship with Mexico".

However, there were no further details on the administration's infrastructure push during the news conference, during which Trump discussed his brinkmanship with North Korea and denied "collusion" with the Russians during the 2016 elections.

Trump tweeted out his demands just before the new year.

Republican legislative priorities also will include the budget, welfare reform and the midterm elections.

Additionally, Republicans have been eager to cut benefit programs like welfare and food stamps.

Democratic lawmakers blasted the $18 billion request, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, and it arrived in the middle of delicate budget negotiations that include the risk of a government shutdown 20 January if no deal is reached. Though Democrats were not included in the discussions, the leaders - some dressed casually in jeans, khakis and sweaters - said they were optimistic that more Democrats would be working with Republicans.

Trump has been facing increasing criticism about his presidential style.
