TWO women have died after a balcony collapsed at a Christmas party in Melbourne as revellers tried to take a group photograph.
It is believed more than 30 people were on the wooden balcony at a house in Balinga Court, Doncaster East, when the structure gave way at about 10.30pm on Saturday.
The tragic incident has left one woman dead and a woman in her 30s fighting for life.
Police said 17 people were rushed to hospital with varying injuries.
"The group got up on to the balcony to take a group photo, which is when it fell down", he said.
Of those injured, the youngest is aged 20 and the oldest, 69.
Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokeswoman Belle Nolan said a number of people were also trapped beneath the collapsed balcony.
About a dozen people were treated by paramedics at the scene but did not require hospitalisation.
It was a chaotic scene as a dozen ambulances and emergency vehicles raced to the property to treat the injured partygoers, Ambulance Victoria's state health commander Paul Holman said.
Detectives were reportedly investigating the scene on Sunday morning and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
