Mass. Hit With Early Flu Season

Compared to this time a year ago, experts say there are double the number of confirmed cases of the flu. Flu season is underway and it's already widespread in four states, including Georgia. Reports coming out of Australia, where the yearly flu strikes first, indicate 93,000 cases of H3N2, a subtype of influenza A. That's more than double the usual number of cases, and particularly worrisome given influenza A typically hits young children and the elderly the hardest.

More than 90 percent of the free vaccines prepared for this flu season have been administered, with about 420,000 doses remaining, the CDC said, urging those eligible for free shots - especially those with chronic liver disease - to get them before the supply runs out.

Nationally, three states, in addition to MA, are seeing widespread cases of the flu.

The Chickasaw Nation and Pontotoc County Health Department are offering flu vaccinations to the public at no cost from 9 a.m.to 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14 at the Chickasaw Nation Community Center, 700 N. Mississippi.

But health officials still recommend getting the flu shot, saying it still inoculates against H1N1 and is better than having no protection. This year, there are concerns that the shot is not very effective, but experts are still encouraging people to get it.
