Android Go is built on Android Oreo, but will come optimized for the smartphones that feature less than 1 GB of RAM.
Originally announced at Google I/O 2017 annual developer conference, this OS is a toned down version of the latest Android Oreo OS which is now present in high-end devices. Now, over two months after that, it has been announced the Oreo update will start rolling out to Android Wear devices today onwards. If you didn't know already, Android Oreo Go edition is a "lighter" version of Google's regular OS and is able to run on devices with less storage and RAM.
With those hardware requirements, and the fact that it runs 15% faster than stock Android on lower-end hardware, Android Go is a flawless fit for the low-end market. Android 8.1 Oreo gets Neural Networks API which enables faster computation and interface on your Android smartphone. Android One follows a Nexus eco-system, where both Google and the manufacturer has the say in deciding the updates and contents of the OS.
There'll also be security patches, bug fixes, memory tweaking and display colour modes getting their own submenu in the Display setting.
As for MediaTek, the company's MT6739, MT6737, and MT6580 processors now all support hardware running Android Go.
While the update should make its way to Pixel and Nexus devices soon, you can get your hands on the OTA image here and the Full Factory Images here.
Qualcomm says that it's now working with Google to deliver an optimized experience for smartphones that come with 1 GB or less of memory.
Do you think Google's Android Oreo Go edition is a much-needed solution to performance disparity among phones, or do you think it worsens the fragmentation problem that's been plaguing Android since its inception? But Google is doing the trick by enabling the GO versions of its apps in the Android Go edition.
