Tokyo Disney owner said to be planning major expansion

Shares of Oriental Land Co Ltd jumped on Thursday after local media reported plans to spend more than 300 billion yen (US$2.7 billion) on a major expansion of its Tokyo Disney Resort theme park, featuring an attraction based on hit film "Frozen". This is in addition to already-announced expansions now under construction, including new Beauty and Beast and Big Hero 6 attractions, as well as a Broadway-style theater and a Soarin' show. The expansion plan is created to alleviate the amusement park's chronic congestion, it said. Here's the Google Maps aerial view of the resort, with Tokyo Disneyland to the north and DisneySea to the south, so you can see how much surface parking area the resort has to play with between the two parks. The report cited growing leisure spending among young consumers and noted visitor growth, higher ticket prices and the Tokyo Disney resort maintaining its 40 percent share of the domestic theme park market.

Oriental Land wants the expansion to include exclusive attractions that can't be found in other Disney theme parks around the world.

Competitor Universal Studios Japan in Osaka increased its own visitor numbers for three years in a row to fiscal 2016, when it pulled in 14.6 million.

Oriental Land plans to maximize the use of existing areas such as a ground-level parking lot located in adjacent spaces by replacing it with a multistory auto park, and is considering using the saved space as an additional recreational area.

Oriental Land is the Japanese operator of the Tokyo Disney Resort, which started with the opening of Tokyo Disneyland in 1983 in Urayasu on the outskirts of Tokyo.
