Stueve Siegel Hanson Files Lawsuit Against Uber - Stueve . Siegel . Hanson LLP Uber is facing a class action lawsuit from USA riders alleging assault

Uber has been hit with yet another lawsuit, after two women filed a class action legal complaint accusing the company of not doing enough to protect riders from rape, which they claim to be direct victims of.

"As alleged in the complaint filed today against Uber, the Company must come forward with information about how many reports it has received about rapes, sexual assaults and gender-motivated harassment to allow consumers to assess whether Uber really does provide safe rides, especially to women". This is no longer an issue of "rogue" drivers who act unlawfully.

One plaintiff was assaulted by an Uber driver in Los Angeles after she fell asleep in the backseat.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, accuses Uber of repeatedly fighting efforts to improve customer safety in states across the country and names MA and Maryland as examples where its failures to adequately screen drivers were allegedly exposed.

An Uber spokesperson said: "These allegations are important to us and we take them very seriously". In addition, the women are asking the court to order an injunction against Uber that would force Uber to change its screening practices such as background checks for its drivers, among other things. The company fired 20 employees this year after a wide-ranging investigation into its climate and workplace culture after former employee Susan Fowler detailed how her sexual harassment complaints were ignored by management and human resources employees for a year - and reports abounded about widespread sexual harassment at the company. Another Uber driver allegedly picked up passengers between shootings. In June, Uber's board of directors forced CEO Travis Kalanick to resign.

Uber has successfully opposed state or national attempts at mandating fingerprint background checks in many markets, with the notable exception of NY and London.

Uber, along with Lyft, in fact left Austin in 2015 after the city council approved an ordinance that required the companies to use fingerprint-based background checks for their drivers. "This self-serving guise has added to Uber's ability to avoid spending more money on driver screening both before and after hiring, and to avoid regulatory measures directed at safety during ride". "Period." That includes divulging how many reports of sexual assault Uber receives and what it does with those reports. The executive named Eric Alexander, who has since been fired, carted those files around for a year. Last week, Khosrowshahi wrote a LinkedIn blog post about Uber's "new cultural norms" saying what made the company successful won't get it to the next level. The company was banned in New Delhi as a result of an alleged rape in that Indian city, and MA denied licenses to more than 8.000 Uber (and Lyft) drivers based on more stringent guidelines in the state.
