The former Bayern Munich star has less than 12 months to run on his current contract at Anfield and wanted a release clause to be inserted into any prospective new deal, but the Reds were reluctant to bow to Can's demands.

Can, now 23, has become an important player for Jurgen Klopp over the past two seasons but his current deal at Anfield is set expire at the end of the season, after which he can be purchased for free. Because if Juventus get their way, they'll be signing both players to pre-contracts in January and bringing them both to Italy next summer on free transfers.

According to Spanish outlet Sport, Goretzka has decided that he will be moving to England when his contract expires at the end of the season.

"It's not easy, and when you have to sign a player for Juventus".

Landing the signature of Schalke's 22-year-old midfielder Goretzka will also be less than straight forward, as the German is now being courted by European giants Barcelona and Bayern Munich, with both North London clubs, in Arsenal and Tottenham also taking an interest. "We remain in the race", Heidel told Kicker.

Marotta continued by explaining: "It's also true that we need to reflect on this squad, in terms of age, but we also realise that we have great professionals". "The will of the players will be decisive".

Premier League champions Chelsea and Liverpool are thought to be favourites to sign Goretzka, although Arsenal have been touted as possible contenders to sign the Schalke man.
