Now, the Bank of England has confirmed that from March 1 2018, the old note will no longer be accepted as payment.

They have been in circulation since 7 November 2000 and feature a portrait of Charles Darwin.

People who still have paper £5 notes can exchange them at the Bank of England in person, or via post by completing a form and sending the note to Department NEX, Bank of England, Threadneedle Street, London, EC2R 8AH.

Over one billion new £10 notes were printed ready for issue back in September.

The old style £10 notes must be spent by that date next year, the Bank of England has confirmed.

The Jane Austen notes have a number of features built in that make them particularly hard to forge.

Retailers, banks and other institutions can refuse to accept the old-style notes beyond the deadline, although it will still be possible for shoppers to exchange them for the new £10 note featuring Jane Austen at the Bank of England.

The note, which is slightly smaller than its paper predecessor, includes a series of raised dots in the top left-hand corner to help visually-impaired users to identify the denomination of the note.

Around 55 per cent of the £10 notes now in circulation are the newer version pictured above, while the remaining 359 million are made of paper.

The end of the old paper tenner follows the official withdrawal last month of the old round £1 coin, which has now been wholly replaced by the new 12-sided version.
