When rumors started firing around previous year about the possibility of McGregor boxing, De La Hoya talked about having the UFC star fight his boxer, Canelo Alvarez. Two rounds. Just one more. The first thing I wanted to do was inspect him and get Mr McGregor and his crew out of the cage so that's what we did.

"Mr Redmond was knocked - I don't want to say he was unconscious - but he was hit quite heavy". Two rounds. That's all I need. You heard it on Golden Boy Radio. He retired with a career record of 39-6 with 30 knockouts.

McGregor exceeded expectations on his boxing debut against Mayweather, taking the undefeated icon 10 rounds, but has made clear his desire to return to mixed martial arts and defend his lightweight title.

De La Hoya was one of the most vocal critics of Mayweather vs. McGregor and he was rightly called out by UFC President Dana White for hypocrisy as De La Hoya didn't have much of an issue with "The Notorious" switching codes when one a Golden Boy fighter was being touted as a potential opponent.

"I've been secretly training, secretly training", De La Hoya said recently in an interview on Golden Boy Radio.

In the lead up to the fight, De La Hoya had penned an open letter to boxing fans calling it a "circus" and a "farce" and warned that the sport "might not ever recover".

McGregor - who remains under contract to UFC - is yet to respond to De La Hoya's comments.

However, he seems to have changed his tune and is keen to face McGregor himself in a fantasy fight that could generate millions. He is expected to return to the Octagon next but said after the Mayweather bout he would consider all of his options and would not rule out a return to boxing in the future.

"If you thought Mayweather/Pacquiao was a black eye for our sport - a matchup between two of the best pound-for-pound fighters that simply didn't deliver - just wait until the best boxer of a generation dismantles someone who has never boxed competitively at any level - amateur or professional", De La Hoya wrote on Facebook.
