The study tracked what participants ate as well as their cardiovascular health.

The research was presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2017, in California.

Eating a vegetarian diet slashes the risk of heart failure by nearly half, scientists have discovered.

Of the five dietary patterns, greater adherence to the plant-based diet had the strongest association with a decreased risk of incident heart failure when adjusted for age, sex and race of the participants and for other risk factors.

Machine learning can make predictions based on data associations, and it has been increasingly used in healthcare and health-related research in the past few years.

"The risk assessment tools we now use for predicting whether someone might develop heart disease, particularly heart failure or stroke, are very good but they are not 100 per cent accurate". "The challenge here is there are so many potential risk factors, and testing each one using traditional methods would be extremely time consuming, and possibly infeasible", she added.

DRINKING just one cup of coffee a week can reduce your risk of heart failure by seven per cent, new research suggests.

It found that each additional cup of coffee drunk per week was associated with a lower risk of heart failure and stroke compared with no consumption.

Previous studies have indicated that people's dietary pattern plays a vital role in increasing or reducing the risk of atherosclerosis, a condition characterized by a gradual narrowing of the arteries, resulting in heart failure, stroke, and heart attack. Nearly all of the coffee drinkers in the study (97%) consumed between one and six cups of coffee a day, says Stevens, so the researchers can't know for sure if the benefits continue at even higher consumption levels.

Heart failure is a potentially fatal condition that occurs when the heart is too week to pump blood efficiently around the body.

Stevens and team also found a correlation between how much red meat we include in our diets and the risk of stroke and heart failure.

Researchers re-analysed data from the Framingham Heart Study, a long-running USA investigation of heart disease risk factors involving thousands of participants. The study also did not determine whether there is a limit to the amount of coffee consumed that's linked with a beneficial effect. To do this, they relied on known risk factors obtained using the Framingham Risk Score, to which they also added the newly revealed correlation between coffee consumption and cardiovascular health.

First author Laura Stevens, from the University of Colorado, US, said: "Our findings suggest that machine learning could help us identify additional factors to improve existing risk assessment models".

"Machine learning may be a useful addition to the way we look at data, and help us find new ways to lower the risk of heart failure and strokes", Dr. David Kao, senior author of the study and an assistant professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora, Colorado, said in a statement.
