Amazon's AWS business is reportedly pulling out of China

Amazon to sell China cloud services unit in $300 million deal Amazon to sell China cloud services unit in $300 million deal

That statement says "Chinese law forbids non-Chinese companies from owning or operating certain technology for the provision of cloud services".

Reuters today reported that Amazon is going to sell its AWS cloud services unit in China to its partner Sinnet Technology in a $300 million deal.

"In order to comply with Chinese law, AWS sold certain physical infrastructure assets to Sinnet", a spokesman for the Amazon.com cloud-services unit said on November 14, adding AWS would still own the intellectual property for its services worldwide. "‎We're excited about the significant business we have in China and its growth potential over the next number of years".

Amazon's sale of the hardware used in its Chinese Public Cloud business comes at a time when the country's authorities are imposing new surveillance measures as well as increasing their examination of cross-border data transfers.

"This move is mostly around regulatory compliance", said Charlie Dai, Beijing-based analyst at Forrester Research.

Earlier this year, Sinnet received instructions from the Chinese government to shut down VPN services that let subscribers circumvent China's "Great Firewall".

Other legislation sees it work with Sinnet but also ChinaNetCenter, which provide the internet data centre and ISP services to deliver AWS's cloud.

Sinnet, which began operating the Amazon services in August 2016, said in a filing late on Monday the pending purchase would help the unit "comply with local laws and regulations and further improve service quality and security".

Microsoft, Oracle and IBM did not immediately respond to request for comment on Tuesday.
