Aussie Tennis Star Jelena Dokic Reveals Years Of Horrendous Abuse By Father

Damir was considered one of tennis worst dads for his frequent arguments with match officials that got him kicked out of three of the four grand slam tournaments Aussie Tennis Star Jelena Dokic Reveals Years Of Horrendous Abuse By Father

In a new autobiography, former Australian tennis star Jelena Dokic has detailed the abuse she suffered at the hands of her father Damir.

She also spoke of verbal abuse from her father, who had a reputation as a hard person to deal with on the tennis circuit during Jelena's career. She said her father also frequently directed vile insults toward her.

Dokic said her father ruined her career.

The tennis great also said an unnamed Australian coach said he would not have let Dokic "come back to Australia, let alone play for wildcards".

We are only beginning now to learn the full story of Jelena Dokic's life, and the silence in which she suffered could only have added to the burden, but her huge strength of character and will to persevere has been evident right from the first time she stepped foot onto the grass at Wimbledon.

"If there is one thing I could take back what he did or certain decisions, leave all the physical stuff and abuse, this was the one I regret", Jelena Dokic said. As Australia "reacted with shock" to her "horrifying allegations", the sport's governing body said that "people had lodged police complaints - but without cooperation from those involved, they could not be fully investigated".

Damir Dokic had accused Australian Open organisers of fixing the 2001 draw to ensure his daughter's early exit after a first-round loss to Lindsay Davenport, before moving his family out of Australia.

In 2009, Damir Dokic was sentenced to 15 months in prison for threatening the Australian ambassador to Serbia with a hand grenade.

He was suspended at times from other tournaments including the U.S. Open, where he was banned in 2000 for abusing staff over the price of a salmon lunch, and at Wimbledon, where he smashed a journalist's phone. She claims she was punched, whipped and even spat on as punishment by her father Damir. That revelation sparked a furious reaction from Damir, who threatened to blow up the vehicle of Australia's ambassador to Serbia.

But Dokic had cut herself loose, and won her first WTA title in eight years with a 2011 victory in Kuala Lumpur.

In the book, she says she was once knocked unconscious during a beating from her father, was regularly beaten with a belt, and once kicked out of the hotel room she was paying for her after losing a semi-final at Wimbledon. She had come full circle, and was the toast of Australia again a decade after her breakthrough Wimbledon win.

"I tried to make things better [between us] but it is not an easy thing to do", she said.

But, as was suspected at the time and now is known in graphic detail, Dokic endured horrific treatment at the hands of her father throughout.

"All of us at Tennis Australia applaud Jelena's courage in telling her story and will continue to support her in any way we can".

"Not just the physical pain but the emotional. that was the one what hurt me the most", she said.
