Russian skiers get life ban from Olympics over alleged doping use

Noah Ferguson | 10 Ноября, 2017, 11:03

He was referring to life bans imposed by Olympic officials on four Russian cross-country skiers on Thursday.

In May 2016, he described in an interview to The New York Times an elaborate doping scheme that he said involved dozens of Russian athletes at the Sochi Olympics.

These statements come amid an ongoing Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into the alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, started after Donald Trump's victory, despite the fact that Moscow has repeatedly denied any interference in the election, calling the claims "groundless" and "absurd". However, he is widely expected to stand and win.

He also claimed the doping scandal was instigated by the United States to influence presidential elections scheduled for March next year, the Associated Press reported.

"In response to our alleged interference in their election, they want to create problems for the election of the president of Russia", Putin said in the Urals city of Chelyabinsk.

Russian President Vladimir Putin hinted at possible United States meddling after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) stripped four Russian cross-country skiers of their Olympic medals on Thursday.

The Russian president also said that the global sport associations, including the IOC, were dependent on things like sponsors and sources of advertising revenues.

Maxim Vylegzhanin, Alexei Petukhov, Yevgeniya Shapovalova and Yulia Ivanova were found guilty of violating anti-doping rules by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) investigative commission led by Denis Oswald, the CCSFR said in a statement on its website on Thursday, reports Xinhua.

The four were named in the McLaren report last December, which alleges that a state-sponsored doping programme existed in Russian Federation between 2011 and 2015.

"All of the four skiers were slapped with life bans based on a similar decision made earlier in regard to (Alexander) Legkov and (Evgeniy) Belov", the source told TASS.
