According to mlive, two different vehicle recalls have been made by German automaker, BMW, making about 1.4 million vehicles in total.

The recalls affect versions of the 3-series, 5-series, X5, X3, and Z3.

The mass recall is the latest setback to hit the German titan, after its Munich headquarters was raided by European Union antitrust regulators late last month as part of a probe into alleged collusion between German carmakers. Also included is the 2008-2011 128i. BMW first received reports of the problem in 2007, but no injuries or crashes related to the issue have been reported. Dealers will replace the heater. The Associated Press reports that a spokesperson for the automaker said the heater is meant to prevent the valve from freezing in cold weather situations. But irregularities in manufacturing can cause corrosion can lead to overheating.

The second recall will address a problem with a heater valve in certain 2007-2011 BMW models equipped with a 6-cylinder engine.

One recall covers 670,000 2006-2011 US 3-Series vehicles to address a wiring issue for heating and air conditioning systems that may overheat and could increase the risk of a fire. Four drivers reported injuries.

Dealers will replace the wiring and connectors.

BMW spokesman Michael Rebstock said the recalls overlap and cover about 1 million vehicles, almost all in the United States and about 15,000 in Canada. The company is reviewing whether the wiring recall will apply to Canadian vehicles.
