Wife of Putin's 'assassination plotter' killed in shooting

Bennie Garza | 31 October, 2017, 11:58

A Ukrainian lawmaker says a Chechen man sought by Russian Federation on charges of involvement in a botched plot to kill President Vladimir Putin has been wounded in an ambush near the Ukrainian capital.

Adam Osmayev and his wife Amina Okuyeva were in a vehicle which was ambushed from bushes near a railway track in the outskirts of Kiev, interior ministry advisors Anton Gerashchenko and Zoryan Shkiryak said on Facebook.

A member of the board of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry, MP Anton Herashchenko, reported this on his Facebook page.

Okuyeva, 34, died in the shooting and Osmayev was injured "but will live", Herashchenko was quoted as saying by the BBC. "I just spoke to him on the telephone".

Interior Ministry spokesman Yaroslav Trakalo said police would open an investigation into a "premeditated murder".

The Chechen native was arrested in Odessa in 2012 in a joint operation by Russian and Ukrainian security forces, accused of making explosive devices along with his accomplices which they planned to use in an alleged plot to assassinate President Putin. They claimed Osmayev and other plotters were linked to a Chechen rebel warlord.

In June, Osmayev survived another apparent attempt on his life, although in that instance Okuyeva shot back at the gunman. Okuyeva used to work for the politician in an advisory role.

Relations between Kiev and Moscow collapsed in 2014 after Russia seized Ukraine's Crimea peninsula and backed a pro-Russian separatist insurgency in eastern Ukrainian regions.
