Alonso: 'Too easy' for Hamilton in charge to 2017 F1 title Alonso: 'Too easy' for Hamilton in charge to 2017 F1 title

Fernando Alonso tempered Lewis Hamilton's title celebrations by claiming the 2017 Formula One drivers' champion had it "too easy" this year.

But Alonso - seemingly bullish about McLaren's chances of a revival with Renault power next year - seemed keen to bring former colleague Hamilton down a peg or two after the race. Ferrari has arguably had the better race vehicle in the second half of the season but was hamstrung by a series of setbacks after the Italian Grand Prix.

"Last year he had Nico until the last race, fighting every single race".

When asked by NBCSN after the race if the late battle with Hamilton was fun, Alonso said: "Not so much when you have different cars with different speed on straights!" Spent behind the Sauber, then [Kevin] Magnussen, then Hamilton. 'I think it was good - overall we start last, we finish in the points, which is a good target for us, ' he said.

By finishing P10, Alonso recorded his first points finish since the Hungarian Grand Prix at the end of July, having claimed for much of the Mexico weekend that McLaren had the strongest auto in the field, only for its power unit to hold it back.

With McLaren reaching the end of its disastrous relationship with Honda, Alonso hopes the team is joining a partnership which gives them the tools to fight the world champions.

"I think [Hamilton] knows". "This year was too easy, ' the Spaniard reiterated".

"He knows how strong the McLaren vehicle is in the corners, he saw [in the race]", said Alonso, after he battled over ninth position with Hamilton for several laps.

"Hopefully McLaren-Renault will change this easy time for them".

"Next year hopefully we can give a harder time to him".
