The German government has announced that it will sign off on a deal to sell three new ThyssenKrupp submarines to Israel.

The German government has approved the controversial sale of three military submarines to Israel following a month-long delay on Monday.

The submarines would go into service starting in 2027, replacing the three oldest submarines in the fleet. Officials had delayed the deal as concerns arose about a corruption investigation in Israel. The investigation centers on a possible conflict of interest, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's personal lawyer also representing ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems' agent in Israel.

It was revealed a year ago that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's lawyer David Shimron also worked as an advisor for the Israeli representative of ThyssenKrupp.

The MoU includes an escape clause allowing Germany to back out of the deal if criminality is found in the behavior of senior decision makers or officials involved in the decision to purchase the submarines.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's official spokesperson, Steffen Seibert, told press that Germany would sign an official treaty detailing the confidential level of government subsidies offered in the arms sale by Berlin later on Monday.

The submarine deal also sparked debate in Germany in the past, with opposition parties warning it would be a wrong signal for Israel and could undermine regional stability.
