Storm causes disruption in Durban
12 October, 2017, 17:34
Port operations in Durban have ground to a halt as a result of a storm that has hit the South African city.
The operation involved eight tugboats and lasted almost three hours.
This comes after severe storms in Durban wreaked havoc at the port, unberthing ships and blowing containers into the water on Tuesday.
This included the stricken MSC INES container vessel that was grounded across the port's entrance channel.
Teams had also managed to refloat the floating dock at the premises of Southern African Shipyards together with one of TNPA's nine new tugs which was still under construction at the shipyard. Sounding surveys indicate that there is some obstruction on the seabed that could pose a risk to navigation and the Port operators state that in the interest of ensuring safe navigation for vessels, operations have commenced in channels that are clear from obstruction.
The Durban Port manager Moshe Motlohi said it was still too early to assess the extent or costs of damages to sub-Saharan Africa's largest port, which is a key transit point for commodities such as maize. The Business Continuity Plan (BCP) will remain in place until TNPA has restored normality at the Port of Durban.
Motlohi could not estimate when the port would be opened again but said it is unlikely it will open on Wednesday.
