Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday offered to take over the metro if the Centre agrees.

Delhi metro rides became costlier from Tuesday after the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) board decided against rolling back the hike recommended by the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC).

Delhi Congress on Monday threw hat in the ring amidst political slugfest between ruling AAP government in Delhi and the BJP-led Centre over the proposed fare hike of Metro train fare.

The DMRC Board members discussed the proposal with the Delhi government but made a decision to go with the recommendations of Fare Fixation Committee (FCC), which were to be brought into effect from October 10.

He said that as per Section 37 of the Railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002, recommendations of the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC) are "binding and sacrosanct and the central government cannot interfere in the matter of metro fares". The CM has said since the Delhi Government and the Centre is equal partners in the Delhi Metro, the Centre too should bear the burden of 50 per cent operational costs.

Kejriwal also expressed his willingness to take over the Delhi metro if it bodes well with the central government.

Others, however, have justified the fare hike What is your opinion on the new metro fares in Delhi?

"The authorities say that the Metro is running in losses, but while travelling, we have witnessed that there is no space in the Metro to even step in". Over the years, the discount structure on return journey, store pass and trip pass have been changed to charge higher fares.

The metro fare hike is expected to bring down the number of riders as the increase in May did.

Earlier, Union Urban Development Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, in a letter to Kejriwal, said the meeting was called in the spirit of "cooperative federalism". The maximum fare has been increased to Rs 60 as compared to current Rs 50. They are: 1 station, Rs 10; 2 stations, Rs 15; 3-6 stations, Rs 20; 7-9 stations, Rs 30; 10-13 stations, Rs 40; 14-17 stations, Rs 50; more than 18 stations, Rs 60. The Delhi Metro fares were just last revised in May.
