The quake struck the Pacific Ocean just off the coast of Mexico, registering a magnitude of 8.4 and causing severe damage to many towns in nearby areas.

Countries including Ecuador, El Salvador and Guatemala could see waves of one metre or less, while Hawaii and the western and South Pacific are not believed to be in any danger. The magnitude-8.1 natural disaster struck the country's southern coast, but was felt even miles away from the quakes epicenter.

The quake, which collapsed buildings and sent people fleeing from their homes in the middle of the night, was "the most powerful registered in Mexico in at least 100 years" said President Enrique Peña Nieto. The Mexican states of Chiapas, Oaxaca and Tabasco confirmed a number of deaths in their regions.

Operation USA has ties to Mexico, having worked there in the wake of previous disasters, including the major 1985 quake and most recently following major flooding in 2013.

Oaxaca state Gov. Alejandro Murat told local news media Friday that at least 23 people in his state died.

Thousands of people were evacuated in the coasts of Chiapas, where tsunami warnings were triggered, which was later lifted.

The quake was felt in Mexico City and Guatemala City. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the magnitude at 8.1, but other institutions rated it between 8.2 and 8.4.

The impact of the quake was felt in the city and state of Mexico, the states of Chiapaz, Veracruz, Hidalgo and several others.

Hundreds of buildings collapsed or were damaged, power was cut to more than 1.8 million people and authorities closed schools in at least 11 states for safety checks.

Mexico City and Puebla were among the cities where sirens went off but no major incidents were reported, Uribe said.

And the country faces the prospect of Hurricane Katia hitting in a few days.
