Google CEO Cancels Gender-Diversity Meeting After Employees Targeted Online

Poll: 56% Of Google Employees Don't Believe James Damore Should've Been Sacked Why James Damore Wants To Sue After Google FIRED Him For His Anti-Woman 'Manifesto' (And Who Just Offered

Google CEO Sundar Pichai cancelled a company-wide Town Hall that had been organized after an employee was sacked for writing a memo that criticized the tech-giant's diversity efforts.

With the recent debacle caused by former Google engineer James Damore's diversity memo, the search engine company was meant to have a town hall meeting to address the issue.

The questions that were planned by "Googlers" appeared externally this afternoon and some employees are being named on "some websites", CEO Sundar Pichai said in an email sent to employees.

The memo says biological differences between men and women may explain why women are not equally represented in the technology industry.

The company-wide forum will be held at Google headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., and will stream live to its global offices starting at 4 p.m. PT, according to Recode. The controversy prompted Google's top executive to cancel his summer vacation and return to the firm's headquarters to criticize the contents of the document penned by one James Damore who was laid off on Monday. Google officials quickly distanced themselves from the memo before firing Damore.

Damore was sacked Monday from the internet search company for publishing a memorandum on the possible reasons the company struggles with diversity and potential solutions for fixing it.

"I think the town hall wasn't a good idea to begin with, given that the Dory just invited more abuse", a Google employee told Gizmodo under the condition of anonymity. Google ended up firing Damore for his trouble, and then tried to organize a general town hall meeting with all employees on hand in order to discuss the issues raised by his memo.

Lately, Google has been experiencing a hard time keeping up with gender diversity.

Despite circulating internally at Google for more a month, Damore became a lightening rod after Gizmodo published the memo in full over the weekend.

Apart from Pichai, the memo was also denounced by Danielle Brown, Google's new vice president for diversity, integrity and governance. Discrimination lawsuits might not directly target a Google decision not to fire Damore but could cite it as evidence of a "hostile work environment", said Segal. Google has denied the charges, arguing that it doesn't have a gender gap in pay, but has declined to share full salary information with the government.
