Jaguar is taking advantage of an insatiable appetite for crossovers and SUVs among vehicle buyers adding a second to its line-up ahead of the electric I-Pace next year. Situated below the current World Car of the Year, the F-Pace, in Jaguar's range E-Pace will mirror its larger sibling and straddle market segments, sitting between Audi's Q3 and larger Audi Q5 in terms of footprint. With the E-Pace, they're very sleek and feline, just as is the case with the F-Type.

But the styling is different from the F-Pace - although the big grille is there - with lights which sweep back, like the F-Type's, with a sweeping roof, strong lines on the flanks, defined haunches, chicane graphic tail lights, crisp surfacing and a clean rear end. Round climate controls live below a wide touchscreen and above the automatic shift lever.

Contrary to its name, the E-Pace is actually powered by traditional internal combustion engines. That accompanies brake-based torque vectoring. Standard models make 246 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque, but buyers can also choose a version offering 296 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.

The E-Pace is also fast, with one model reaching 60 miles per hour in under 6 seconds. Both engines will be mated to a 9-speed transmission.

Under the skin, the E-Pace is closely related to sister brand Land Rover's Discovery Sport - a former What Car? The usual shift modes apply: Eco mode slows down throttle and upshifts quickly, while Dynamic mode turns up the wick on shift speed and eagerness.

The E-Pace is also equipped with All Surface Progress Control, a low-speed cruise control created to handle low-traction conditions.

Techno options include Active Driveline which aids grip, cornering, off-road and has a bias towards rear-wheel drive.

These have involved adapting the Land Rover platform to incorporate Jaguar's 5-link multi-link rear suspension while, at the front, a new hollow-cast aluminium front knuckle added to the pseudo MacPherson struts is claimed to provide additional camber for a better turn-in and less understeer.

Adaptive Dynamics adjusts damper settings every 10 milliseconds to reduce body roll and makes it adaptable to poor road conditions.

Jaguar has taken the wraps off its new SUV, the E-Pace, at a glittering event in the UK. While the E-Pace starts more expensive than rivals such as the BMW X1, the Mercedes-Benz GLA-class, and the Lexus NX, it undercuts the F-Pace's base price by $3050. However, boot space is above average among its peers at 480 litres.

Inside the cabin there's plenty of stowage space, from the 8.4-litre large storage compartment between the front seat, to a generous 10-litre glovebox and the spacious 10.6-litre door bins. It also assists the vehicle in maintaining a steady speed on climbing or descending inclines.

Jaguar Land Rover is renowned for creating SUVs that get stuff done, and that's the case with the E-Pace too.

Jaguar's own Touch Pro system is the brains behind the customizable display, which boasts a home screen with various apps and widgets that you can select and arrange to your liking - much like the home screen on your smartphone. High-power audio, ambient lighting, a head-up display, and up to five USB ports can be specified, as can a power-operated, gesture-controlled tailgate and in-car data service, as well as navigation.
