GOP senators now oppose health care bill as written

U.S. President Donald Trump says he and his Republican colleagues in the Senate are facing "a very narrow path" in their seven-year effort to overhaul the national healthcare reforms championed by former President Barack Obama. Collins, from ME, told the same show she was doubtful that the bill could pass this week, adding that she was very concerned about the proposals' impact on older people and the most vulnerable.

"We have a very good plan", Trump said in an interview aired Sunday.

"They'd like to get certain changes", he said, "and we'll see if we can take care of that".

The former president's description of the bill's fundamental meanness did indeed echo words used by Trump to describe the House bill, which passed in May after an earlier vote on the healthcare bill was cancelled due to a lack of support from within the GOP. Dean Heller of Nevada also said he doesn't support the bill, but because of its cuts to Medicaid and his worries that it will not lower insurance premiums for people.

"It's a disaster for NY, and we are not going to let it pass", Schumer said.

"It would be so great if the Democrats and Republicans could get together and wrap their arms around it, and come up with something that everyone is happy with", Trump said.

We've already been hearing from lawmakers, medical advocacy groups and insurers these last couple of days, so we wanted to turn to somebody who has been covering health policy for quite some time. Much of the nation's $3 trillion health care industry opposes the bill. And McConnell has done little to woo the health care stakeholders who were assiduously courted by Obama from his first months in office as he fought for his legislation.

Sasse addressed health care at a private retreat for top donors to the libertarian Koch brothers' political network, which favors full repeal.

Administration spokesmen insisted the bill does not cut Medicaid, simply reduce its growth.

The Senate bill maintains much of the structure of the House's but differs in key ways.

As the debate intensifies over health care legislation, support is growing for the Affordable Care Act.

Because of this, this has been an accelerated and secretive process, and the Democrats can cry foul about that, he said.

"I don't have the feedback from constituencies who will not have had enough time to review the Senate bill", he said. Even four of the most conservative senators - Rand Paul of Kentucky, Ted Cruz of Texas, Mike Lee of Utah and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin - released a joint statement saying they would oppose the bill if it didn't include significant changes.

As one of five Republican senators that announced opposition to the bill in its current form, Paul said he would consider voting for partial repeal of Obamacare, if there's a stalemate, but argued the Senate bill "isn't anywhere close to repeal". He called Democrats "obstructionists" for not rallying around the measure, which was drafted behind closed doors by 13 Republican senators. Susan Collins of Maine, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. If the risk pool is healthier, premiums would rise more slowly. Democrats have every right not to like them. And they will use Sen. Revealed on Thursday, the bill remains deeply unpopular, and with the vote looming on the horizon, prominent Democrats and progressives are speaking out - including the party's 2016 presidential nominee.

But that criticism comes amid a striking shift in public opinion.

In June, 51 percent of people viewed the law favorably, compared to 43 percent in November 2016, according to a monthly poll conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation. The 51 percent is the highest percentage since the poll began in 2010.
