Prospects for Russia's nascent protests unclear after rally

Police arrest hundreds of protesters in Russia Prospects for Russia's nascent protests unclear after rally

Navalny - who set it all in motion - was whisked through his court hearing on Monday and handed a 30 day prison sentence.

"And the Kremlin, I think, has been taken back by the scale of these protests and has reacted both times by detaining hundreds of protests as a lot of them in Moscow and St. Petersburg", Magnay continued as she chronicled Navalny's run-ins with Russian authorities.

Tens of thousands of citizens across Russian Federation had taken to the streets in protest despite the government's attempts to ban demonstrations and harass protesters. Police arrested 1,500 people nationwide, including more than 1,000 in Moscow, and a handful are being prosecuted for attacking police.

Moscow police said Navalny would be charged with administrative offences of resisting arrest and a second violation of demonstration organisation rules.

Yashin's party has an uneasy relationship with Alexei Navalny, the anti-corruption activist who called the Monday protests that also took place in St. Petersburg and scores of other cities.

All across Russian Federation, thousands of citizens protested against Putin and his corrupt regime yesterday. In St Petersburg, dozens were reported detained by police at the protest.

Ahead of a presidential election in March which Putin is expected to contest and that Navalny hopes to run in, the battle for Russians' hearts and minds is escalating.

They also follow a film made by Navalny's team that accuses Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev of amassing vast personal wealth controlled through a network of shadowy foundations, which has been viewed over 22 million times on YouTube. This is a generation that has only ever known one leader - President Vladimir Putin - and some clearly are unhappy with that.

Those figures usually described as opposition leaders ignored the protests, with the exception of some younger politicians like Ilya Yashin, who does not have much of a following.

Other images from the day show thousands of demonstrators in St. Petersburg chanting slogans against Putin - and black-clad police marching through the crowd, making arrests and pulling people off of monuments. Navalny served a 15-day jail term after the protest in March.

"You had this odd moment", adds Maynes, "where you had people protesting and then people in these costumes lingering about, and of course, some tourists caught up in the melee and then just Russians who wanted to take advantage of the holiday".

The re-enactors watched the rally before riot police broke up the crowd and randomly seized the protesters.

Tens of thousands rallied in more than 100 Russian towns and cities on Monday, and hundreds were arrested.

The White House this afternoon called on the Russian government to release demonstrators arrested earlier today in anti-corruption protests across Russia. "Police grabbed young women and young men and dragged them away from central streets and central squares of Russian cities", says Nemtsova.

Organized by opposition leader Navalny on a public holiday, the protests led to mass arrests in Russia's two largest cities.
