House passes bill to deny health insurance tax credits to illegal immigrants

Trump's remarks were a surprising critique of a Republican-written House measure whose passage he lobbied for and praised.

The House of Representatives narrowly approved its version of repeal last month, but Senate Republicans have been unable to coalesce around their own version of a bill, with moderates and conservatives pushing in different directions in meetings behind closed doors.

The New York Democrat cited critical comments Vice President Mike Pence, then an IN congressman, made after the 2010 health care law passed about the process used by Democrats.

Predictions in this political environment - and with Donald Trump in the White House - are a unsafe thing. Now, facing a deadline if they want to finish the legislation this summer, the Trump administration is looking to step up pressure on GOP senators.

Senate Republican leaders say they still hope to vote on a bill to repeal Obamacare before lawmakers leave town for the July 4th recess.

Their descriptions of Trump's words differed slightly.

Trump said whatever Republican health reform passes, it will be a "phenomenal bill" that's "generous, kind, with heart".

According to a conservative Senate aide, Trump told the lawmakers "we need to be more generous".

However, GOP sources are wondering aloud about whether they are rushing the bill since it could well fail if voted on so quickly.

"I think he realizes our bill is going to move probably from where the House was and he seems fine with that", Thune said.

"Will there be a hearing on the health-care proposal?" she asked during a committee meeting Thursday.

"Americans won't forget that @HouseGOP passed a "mean" bill to rip healthcare from millions then celebrated @ the WH", said Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md. Will the bill even have the votes?

Other problems include funding for tax credits to allow people to gain access to insurance coverage and maintaining Obamacare's essential health benefits, which mandate a minimum of health procedures that insurance plans must cover. That's exactly what they're planning to do now, and they will succeed unless the Senate - both Democrats and Republicans - feel an unprecedented swell of resistance against this truly evil legislation. "I learned more from you all in this conversation that there may have in fact have been something submitted to CBO, but if that's the case, I don't know what it is nor what it says". At the Capitol, the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, said Republicans were hard at work on their legislation, although he did not divulge any specifics about it.

At the start of the lunch, Trump said he wanted the Senate to pass a bill to repeal and replace former President Barack Obama's signature domestic policy achievement "as soon as we can do it".

MacArthur's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump's description of the bill MacArthur helped resuscitate.

Republicans now face a do-or-die moment to pass a bill.

Even the latest Fox News poll found that most Americans now believe "Obamacare" has been good for the country.
