Trump set to announce US withdrawal from Paris climate accord
02 June, 2017, 06:31
World leaders pledged Thursday to keep up the fight against global warming and urged Donald Trump to be part of that effort, hours before the US president was due to announce whether he would pull out of the Paris climate accord.
The leaders of France, Germany and Italy said in a joint statement that they regretted the United States' decision to withdraw from the accord, but affirmed "our strongest commitment" to implement its measures and encouraged "all our partners to speed up their action to combat climate change".
The United States is pulling out of the worldwide climate treaty signed in Paris in 2015, its president Donald Trump announced on Thursday (1 June). Musk remained an advisor, arguing he could engage on critical issues, which presumably included climate change. "President Trump's decision is profoundly in conflict with what the majority of Americans want from our president; but no matter what he does, we will ensure that our inevitable transition to a clean energy economy continues".
Most importantly, developing nations abandoned their long-held notion that reducing greenhouse gas emissions was an obligation just for rich countries - the main reason that the George W. Bush administration refused to join the Kyoto deal.
Musk followed up with a tweet saying, "Will have no choice but to depart councils" if Trump pulls out of the Paris deal backed by almost 200 other countries. Chinese premier Li Keqiang, visiting Germany, said his country would remain committed to combating climate change, despite United States moves. And even with the environmental regulations passed under President Barack Obama, the USA was unlikely to meet its original commitment - to reduce carbon emissions by 26 to 28 percent below 2005 levels.
He said the deal gives advantages to countries like India and China.
However, he ultimately lost out to conservatives who claimed Paris Climate Accord was bad for the US.
Supporters of the agreement, which include many Republican business leaders as well as environmental activists, say just the opposite - that steps to combat global warming would help the USA economy by building up new industries, especially solar and wind power.
Also this week, a Republican group called Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions, released an ad featuring support from top executives for global climate action, including a few members of the White House business advisory council.
He said the USA will begin negotiations to re-enter the Paris Agreement "on terms that are fair to the U.S.".
"This is not a short-term policy under one single administration, this is a century-long in which there will be changes in the American administration", Canete said, referring to the US elections cycle.
Mr Juncker said: "The climate deal says: It takes three, four years after the treaty took effect last November to exit the agreement".
Mr Trump suggested that other nations were "laughing" at the U.S. and that the accord was "about other countries gaining an advantage over the United States". Ditching Paris, Trump insisted, would be a boon for U.S.jobs and industries that have been subjected to "harsh economic restrictions".
"It was designed from beginning to end to satisfy Trump's base and no one else", said Michael Oppenheimer, a climate scientist at Princeton University.
In 1997, the U.S. joined most of the rest of the world in agreeing to the Kyoto Protocol, which listed binding emissions-curbing targets only for rich nations - those most responsible for carbon pollution blamed for global warming. America is the second-biggest greenhouse-gas polluter after China, accounting for 12 percent of global emissions, according to the World Resources Institute.
Before taking office, Trump repeatedly dismissed climate change as a hoax and suggested that Obama-era climateregulations put the U.S.at a competitive disadvantage.
"Only conservative Republicans are split, with marginally more saying the USA should participate (40%) than saying we should not participate (34%)".
